PRICE OF LOVE EPISODE 2

EPISODE 2

Ben began to cry. He stood never wanting to leave. Something keep on telling him maybe it was a test. 'Sir, I love your daughter and I swear to make you proud. You often tell me I have greatness in me and I'm like a son to you.'  'She is my only child. You will not understand.'

Ben ran to the waiting cab. Anita was there waiting for him. 'He said No?' She asked him when the cab begun to leave. 'We will convince him of our love, it's just a test of our patience.' He stared into her eyes. 'I know father, he doesn't change his mind. I have a feeling he has always known. He already had an answer before you asked him. The problem is that I've never gone against him. Never.'
She began to drift away. He could feel it. I spoke to him one of those days. He looked tattered and almost destroyed. His eyebrows caved in grief. His eyes sunk with such weight. He was heartbroken not just by the betrayal of Doctor but the fact that Anita could not weather the storm. It almost seemed that she worshipped her father and no person else, which broke his heart.

'I have a job for you.' Doctor called him one day. Doctor was ashen with grief but slightly relieved as he stared at Ben. 'I'm starting an NGO by the name SAVE CENTRE and I want you to be my manager there. I believe in you Ben. I believe in you.' Ben walked out of the office feeling worse. He knew he should have turned down the offer out of pride but his sick mother and hunger was a more convincing point. He began to cry.

Some days Anita will visit the NGO. She looked prettier now but colder.  She rarely smiled at him. She often will drop some materials for the motherless homes or look through the organizational books. Then she left. Ben will often look into space afterwards. Staring at the stained glass.
The people working under him knew the story. He couldn't seem to keep his mouth shut. He bled and needed them to see. They once told him that a fine car with a Big-Boy-kinda-look dude once dropped the lady at the gate. He gave the gate man, gardener, and even some staff members some cash. They apologised to Ben for not rejecting money.

Anita would soon marry the guy with 'no-great-attitude' that Doctor always boasted that he wanted. But this new guy had a wealthy family and a good job. 'What do they really want?' He asked me one day. Back then I was cruelly realistic 'This is no movie bro, Rich folks do not dine with paupers. The man may like you. But of course he loves his dog too. He can't ask it to marry Anita.'

It was a norm that tough cases be transferred to Ben for counselling at the Outfit, that was why he was angry when a young lady was waiting for him at the office. She was a victim of all manner of abuses suffered in the hand of her uncle. But as trivial as it may look, something in him wanted to protect her.  He listened to her story. He wept with her too. Men are trash cans housing trash, he concluded.
